The Reading & Writing Connection
With
Leah Mermelstein
Thanks to the generosity of our PTO, the teachers at James Madison Primary School explored the planning of reading and writing units with Leah Mermelstein, an expert in the field of literacy.
Leah challenged our kindergarten and first grade teachers to examine their writing goals in a Small Moments Unit of Study, and then envision what those goals could mean for the teaching of reading. With Leah's direction, the teachers looked at their writing goals with a reading lens. This, in turn, opened up grand opportunities to develop well connected reading and writing lessons.
Our grade two teachers traveled a different path with Leah. They chose to develop additional lessons to enhance and extend the current Nonfiction Unit of Study. The work began with an introduction to the different types of nonfiction studies and the various methods for choosing a topic. Dialog followed regarding the establishment of goals, text structure, conventions, and language particular to the genre. Much to everyone's delight, a variety of new and exciting structures of nonfiction came to life.
The day's work ended with a debriefing session in which we celebrated our many experiences in small group shares. We were awed and inspired by a realm of possibilities. We soon realized that our experience produced more questions than answers, and so the dialog and the learning will continue.
